Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
Updated October 22, 2026
It could be an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault or a worn-out breaker.
Do this now
- Unplug extras like a space heater or hair dryer.
- Push the breaker fully to OFF, then back to ON.
Common causes
| Cause | Signs | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Overloaded circuit | It trips when the circuit draws more current than its wires can handle. | Ask a pro to check the load on that circuit. Find a pro |
| Short circuit | It trips the very moment you switch on one certain appliance, every time you try. | Have a pro check that appliance and its wiring. Find a pro |
| Ground fault | It trips once water has made contact with wires. | Have a pro find where water reached the wiring. Find a pro |
| Worn-out breaker | It trips again and again, even when you can't find any reason for it. | Have a pro test the breaker. Find a pro |
| Arc-fault (AFCI) nuisance trip | It trips when you run a new vacuum cleaner or some other new appliance. | Ask a pro to look at the arc-fault breaker. Find a pro |
Safe checks you can do before and after the reset
Before you reset
- Find the tripped breaker, which sits at OFF or partly tripped in the middle.
- Take as many other loads off that circuit as you can, like a window AC unit.
- Give the breaker and the wire behind it time to cool before you reset it.
Find the cause
- Plug things back in one by one, like the microwave, and watch for a trip.
- If one appliance seems to cause it, test it in an outlet in a different room.
For next time
- Label each breaker with the rooms and appliances it runs, so the next trip is quicker.
Common questions
Is a tripping breaker dangerous?
The trip is the breaker doing its job as a safety device. It cuts power so wires don't overheat, which could otherwise lead to a fire.
Why does water make a breaker trip?
Electricity can jump from the wiring loop and follow the water trail. That causes a surge, and the breaker trips.
What does a ground fault breaker sense?
It senses electricity going to earth instead of through the circuit's wires. GFCI outlets are a good idea in rooms where you use water often.
What should I do with a tool that tripped it?
For your safety, replace the tool and its cord with new equipment. Do this for any tool that tripped it through a short or a ground fault.
What fixes might an electrician suggest?
Electricians may recommend a new breaker or rewiring part or all of the home. Work inside the breaker box is a job for an experienced electrician.
