- Put on your mask, goggles and gloves first.
- Grab a bucket, a soft cloth and some dish soap.
Common causes
| Cause | Signs | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mold on hard surfaces | Mold sits on a hard surface you can scrub, not on material that soaks up water. | Clean it yourself with the steps below. You can do this |
| A plumbing leak | Mold shows up near a plumbing leak or another water problem in the bathroom. | Have a plumber fix the leak as soon as possible. Find a pro |
| Water damage that stayed wet | A water-damaged wall or ceiling that wasn't dried within 24 to 48 hours of getting wet. | Have a flood cleanup pro dry the damaged area. Find a pro |
| A spot that's always damp | A place that's often or always damp, which can be hard to keep completely free of mold. | Dry everything in that spot completely, every time. You can do this |
| Moldy ceiling tiles or carpet | Mold on ceiling tiles, carpet or other absorbent material that soaks up water. | Ask a pro whether it has to be thrown away. Find a pro |
How to clean mold off bathroom walls and ceilings safely
Before you start
- Before going near it, cover your mouth and nose with at least a NIOSH Approved N95 respirator.
- Wear long sleeves or other protective clothing, and keep bare hands off anything moldy.
Clean it
- Fill a bucket with water and a mild non-phosphate detergent, and keep a dry towel handy.
- Wipe each moldy wall or ceiling spot with a damp cloth dipped in that mix.
- Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner, even in the same bucket.
Finish up
- Towel each spot dry right away; mold can come off most items cleaned and dried quickly.
Common questions
Can I use bleach instead of soap?
Bleach or dish detergent can be used to clean mold in your home. If you choose bleach, use no more than 1 cup of it in 1 gallon of water.
What kind of goggles should I wear?
Choose goggles designed to keep out dust and small particles. Goggles that don't have ventilation holes are recommended, so look for a pair with no vents on the sides.
Can I vacuum the mold first?
Use a HEPA vacuum on loose mold first, if you have one. Then wipe with non-phosphate detergent, the same mild mix you'd use in the cleaning steps.
Will old water stains show through when I repaint?
A stainblocker coating may be needed before repainting, to keep old water stains from showing through the new color. Brush it over the stained spots once the wall is clean and dry.
How soon should I clean it up?
Clean up the mold promptly once you find it, and fix the water problem that let it grow in the first place.
